Fishers police rescues giant tortoise

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – The Fishers Police Department rescued a giant tortoise named Alfred on Friday.

When a homeowner discovered the reptile, he called police.

“They thought that it probably needed to be rescued. So, we located it and we were able to determine that it probably was owned by somebody. It probably wasn’t just a wild tortoise because of its size,” said Fishers Police Sgt. Tom Weger.

Officials estimated that the tortoise weighed at least 150 pounds. Once officials realized that the tortoise was probably a pet, they spread the word on social media.

After a few hours, Alfred’s owner came to claim him.
