A historical look at rain and the Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Here’s a look at how rain has impacted the Indianapolis 500 since 1911. Only 12 times has rain either shortened or completely postponed the race.

The most recent postponement was in 1997, when rain postponed the start of the race on Sunday. Rain stopped the race after only 15 laps on Monday and was completed on Tuesday.

Rain has shortened the race two times in the last 15 years. In 2004, morning rain delayed the start of the race by almost two hours.

After 27 laps, rain stopped the race for almost two hours. Severe storms, including a tornado warning for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, forced the race to end after 166 laps.

The most recent impact by rain during a race was in 2007. That race was stopped at lap 113 for almost three hours. Another round of heavy rain caused the race to be called on lap 166.

This list only shows rain during scheduled race times.
