Fired Weis still highest paid Notre Dame coach on payroll

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Documents provided to the IRS by the University of Notre Dame show Charlie Weis remained the highest paid coach on the school’s payroll despite being fired following the 2009 season.

The documents show Weis was paid $2.054 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014, nearly twice as much as the $1.18 million his replacement, Brian Kelly was paid. Kelly was paid less than a year earlier, when he earned $1.46 million, including a $607,200 in bonus and incentive pay while leading the Irish to a berth in the national championship game. Kelly is allowed to receive additional compensation from external sources.

The form shows athletic director Jack Swarbrick earned $1.35 million, men’s basketball coach Mike Brey made $992,264 and women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw eared $1.26 million.
