Nursing home residents hold miniature 500 race

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is not the only race in Indianapolis in the month of May.

The Little Sisters of the Poor held their annual mini-500 race on Wednesday, where residents from the nursing home race around the roundabout in front of the building in a relay style competition.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard attends the race each year to walk with one of the residents, who is blind.

“It just means so much to me. I can’t tell you how much this means to me (to) come out and do this and help celebrate the 500 season with them. It just touches my heart. Frankly, I love doing it,” said Ballard.

This year, two of the sisters who work with the residents drove a pace car for the Indy 500 to kick off their event. Residents then walked, wheeled and drove motorized scooters in the race.
