The 500 Festival Princess Program has a long history of celebrating Indiana’s most civic-minded, poised, academically driven college-aged women. Serving as a 500 Festival Princess provides young women with once-in-a-life-time experiences and countless opportunities for leadership and professional development.
To be eligible, applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 23, single, and residents of Indiana. They must be full-time students in a fully-accredited Indiana college or university and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. This year’s group has a collective G.P.A of 3.4 representing 29 cities/towns across Indiana and 9 colleges and universities
Since their selection in February, these young women have been serving as ambassadors for the 500 Festival through statewide outreach appearances. From visiting schools, nursing homes or hospitals in their community, to speaking at professional and service organization meetings, the Princesses have spread the word about the impact of the 500 Festival and the Indianapolis 500.
To date, this year’s 500 Festival Princesses have conducted more than 220 outreach efforts across the state, reaching over 42,560 Hoosiers
This year, we added a professional and personal development initiative to the Princess Program. Designed to empower 500 Festival Princesses to make a profound impact within their community and state, our 500 Festival Princesses are gaining valuable, real-world advice and expertise. Led by former 500 Festival Princesses and other women from within our community, these young women are learning how to network and how to serve their community, as well as personal budgeting and finance, resume and cover letter critiques, and professional goal setting…to name a few topics. These workshops will continue throughout the month of May.
Also new in 2015, each 500 Festival Princess will receive a $1,000 scholarship. A first for the 500 Festival Princess Program, these scholarships were established to recognize the 500 Festival Princess and to help with educational expenses. These scholarships were made possible in part by one of our 500 Festival Foundation Board members, Marlyne Sexton. Through Marlyne’s generosity, we have been able to expand the impact of the 500 Festival Princess Program and we’re appreciative of her investment in Indiana’s next generation of leaders
