Deputies: Teen steals boat, runs out of gas, texts dad

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – Tippecanoe County sheriff’s deputies had to make a water rescue Thursday evening on a stolen boat.

Investigators say a 17-year-old teenager stole a boat from the Purdue crew house and took off down the Wabash River. But shortly after the boat ran out of gas, the teenager texted his dad who called police.

The teen was rescued near Fort Ouiatenon.

Deputies found a backpack, a bow and quiver of arrows and a machete in the boat.

Investigators say the teen told them he was heading to Louisiana.

He has been detained for questioning and the case will be turned over to the Purdue Police Department.
