Some St. Mary-of-the-Woods students against admitting men

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (AP) – An all-women’s Catholic college in western Indiana has called off a planned meeting with graduates and the parents of current students as some are opposing the decision to enroll its first male undergraduates on campus this fall.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods College officials decided to allow only current students at Thursday evening’s meeting about the decision announced Tuesday.

Kelsey Hollis of Terre Haute tells the Tribune-Star that many of her fellow students disagree with the decision and believe it is unfair to take away the all-women’s college experience they were promised.

School President Dottie King says the change is needed because studies have found fewer than 2 percent of college-age women will consider attending a single-gender institution.

King says the college will have meetings soon with graduates and parents.
