Girl Scouts to discuss transgender policy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – The leader of the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana says the group will discuss its policy on welcoming transgender children next week following criticism from conservative groups at the national level.

Chief Executive Officer Jackie Ford told The Courier-Journal that the board will review the issue next Tuesday. She said there haven’t been any local requests and it’s not clear whether the board would take any action. Ford said the group is an “inclusive organization” that represents about 14,000 girl scouts in 64 counties in Kentucky and Indiana.

Chris Hartman, who is director of a group that advocates for gay, lesbian and transgender rights, said he hopes the publicity helps brings more diversity to scouting.

Girl Scouts of America says its guidance on transgender youths has existed for several years.
