Zoeller to advise on federal trade policy

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller has been appointed to represent state attorneys general on a board that helps shape U.S. trade policy.

Zoeller’s office announced last week that U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman appointed him to serve on the 28-member Intergovernmental Policy Advisory Committee that shares the concerns of local and state governments on U.S. trade policy.

The state attorneys general enforce the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement under which tobacco companies pay multimillion-dollar settlement payments each year to reimburse states for the health care costs of smoking-related diseases.

Zoeller said he wants to stress the importance of protecting states’ abilities to regulate tobacco sales when the trade representative enters into trade negotiations with other nations.
