2nd Indiana Beach coaster incident in 2 days

MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – Monticello firefighters responded to a second incident this week involving an Indiana Beach roller coaster suddenly coming to a complete stop.

The latest incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Tig’rr steel roller coaster when the entire park lost power.

First responders say by the time they arrived, a 17-year-old girl on the coaster was already being brought to the ground by park employees using a manlift. She was about 30 feet off the ground when employees say there was a power outage causing the coaster to come to a sudden stop.

Firefighters say she was taken to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette where her condition is unknown as of Wednesday evening.

As WISH-TV’s sister station WLFI reported Monday, an unknown mechanical problem on the Steel Hawg coaster caused four people to be stuck about 70 feet in the air. No one was injured in that incident.

Indiana Beach Vice President Don Hurd told WLFI that investigators are still not sure what caused the Steel Hawg to malfunction, but state inspectors approved it to reopen.

As for the Tig’rr, Hurd says the coaster acted as it was supposed to when it lost power by applying the emergency brakes. He believes the 17-year-old was the only person on the Tig’rr when it stopped.
