INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana has filed a lawsuit against a mobile home community accusing them of discrimination against African-Americans, Latinos, families with children who have disabilities and people who have disabilities.

Following a year long investigation the lawsuit was filed against the Shiloh Estates, a mobile home community on the city’s east side after finding the management company, Colorado-based FR Community; and its former manager, Pamela Ziemer were discriminating against their current and former tenants of different cultures, backgrounds and other status.

Amy Nelson, Executive Director of the FHCCI said in a press release that the discrimination was blatant.

“It’s appalling that nearly a half-century after the passage of the Fair Housing Act, we are still finding blatant discrimination in our communities,” Nelson. “The only way we are able to successfully hold these companies and individuals accountable for their unlawful actions is by community members reporting it to the FHCCI.”

According to the lawsuit, the FR Community began managing the community in 2011 during that time tenants of color were “discouraged” from renting. They were also targeted for eviction, excessive fees and denied access to community facilities like the clubhouse and pools.

The lawsuit also states that Ms. Ziemer used racial slurs towards African-American and Latino residents. Tenants with disabilities were also denied requests to put in ramps and other accommodations.

Nelson said that this is not only wrong but it’s unlawful and the FHCCI will enforce the rights for fair housing.

FHCCI mission is to ensure equal housing opportunities for all Indianapolis residents. For more information about FHCCI click here.
