INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Experts are sending out a warning to parents after a 12-year-old drowned at an apartment complex pool on Tuesday.
It happened at the Chateau in the Woods apartments on the city’s north east side.
Charles Darko Jr. had gone down to the pool by himself. He didn’t know how to swim.
Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent Pediatric Emergency Physician, Jason Little said drownings are the second leading cause of death in children younger than 19.
Although it may seem like common sense, Little encouraged everyone to learn how to swim, even those terrified of water. He said parents should consider swim lessons for their children at age four.
Little also discouraged parents from using flotation devices in place of life jackets. One of the most important tips, he said, is never swim alone.
“Encourage your child if they’re going to go swimming (to) always inform their parents. But also take a friend,” said Dr. Little.
In 2014, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent saw three near drowning or drowning incidents.
