Hundreds attend Tamika Catchings scholarship event

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Hundreds filled the Hyatt Regency ballroom downtown for Indiana Fever basketball player Tamika Catchings’ Catch the Stars Foundation event.

Tamika is able to provide a pair of $10,000 scholarships to kids who probably aren’t going to get full rides. These are the ones that may or may not be the last man or woman on the bench but have an opportunity to go to college.

They may or may not play sports when they get there, but Catch is able to help nudge them to wherever they want to go to school.

“It feels great to have it going strong for so long,” said Catchings, who will retire at the end of her 15th season with the Fever next summer. “Every single year it gets bigger and bigger and better and better and I think it’s just a blessing for me to be able to make a difference in so many kids’ lives, but then even for the kids that get blessed to have the opportunity to come and be around our VIP’s here and then even in the dinner, it’s just a lot of them have never been to an event like this and have never been celebrated like we are like we’re able to.”

Pike’s Tyler Baker earned the boys scholarship.
