Lafayette students raise money for Abraham Lincoln plaque

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Junior high school students have raised more than $3,000 with hopes of installing a plaque to commemorate Abraham Lincoln stopping in Lafayette on the way to his inauguration in Washington.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports that students at Tecumseh Junior High school spent the past few weeks fundraising for the plaque. They want to install it near train tracks behind the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette.

Social studies teacher Wade Harrington says the plaque will cost about $3,800. So far students have raised about $3,400.

The proposed plaque design will include a quote from Lincoln’s speech in Lafayette.

Eighth grader Julia Maxwell says “no one knew about this before we started talking about it.”
