Rush County police make arrest in infant’s death

RUSH COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The Rush County Sheriff’s Department and the Rushville Police Department have made an arrest in an infant’s death from March 1.

According to officials, a two-month-old infant was found deceased in a Carthage apartment after they were called for the report of an unresponsive infant. Police say people in the home were acting suspicious, which prompted the investigation.

During the investigation, police found that the infant was left unchecked for several hours and was left in poor sleeping conditions. Although no drugs were found during the initial investigation, police say their was a smell of narcotics in the home. Police believe that the narcotics were taken out of the home before medics arrived.

An arrest warrant was issued on May 27 for the infant’s father, Dylon Lakes, 25, of Liberty. Lakes faces charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, criminal recklessness and possession of marijuana. Lakes was being held at the Rush County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Autopsy results of the infant were not immediately released.

Lakes was charged with neglect of a dependent and criminal recklessness in Henry County in 2010.

He took a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to criminal recklessness.

He received a year of probation and home detention in that case.

He later violated his probation and was sentenced to serve one year of his previously suspended sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Charges were brought after bruises and scratches were found on his then 3-week-old daughter. X-rays also revealed several fractured bones.
