Ball State students working to help clear river logjams

RIDGEVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Logjams along the Mississinewa River are being cleared with help from Ball State University students in an effort to halt flooding and resolve other problems.

The students helped the Randolph County Soil and Water Conservation District obtain an $80,000 state grant to remove the worst of 10 logjams along a 14-mile section of the river stretching from Ridgeville to Albany. They’ve also created a website to educate the public about the logjams.

Assistant journalism professor Adam Kuban tells The Star Press  that one student fell in to his waist while standing on debris that he thought would support him. He says the logjams make the area smell like “a big dirty diaper.”

Some of the logjams are so big that they will require backhoes to clear.
