‘Dump the Pump’ month encourages green transportation
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – IndyGo is launching a new push to encourage people to leave their car at home and use public transit instead. “Dump the Pump” month will kick off with an event on Monument Circle Monday morning.
IndyGo will host the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to offer people the opportunity to learn more about green transportation. Organizations like Indy COG, Pacers Bikeshare, Commuter Connect and Blue Indy will also be there. In addition to learning more about green transit, people can enjoy music, prizes and free food.
National Dump the Pump Day is June 18, but IndyGo is making it a month-long celebration by rewarding riders. Anyone who buys a bus pass throughout June can register to win prizes like free bus rides for a year or a Pacers Bikeshare membership. Even if you can’t attend the event, you can still register your bus pass for prizes online.
Over the past few months, IndyGo has worked revitalize the bus system in Indianapolis. This is just the latest push to spread the word.
It’s not just IndyGo pushing “green” transportation. Downtown Indy is encouraging people to go car-free all summer long. It’s started a program where you register online and track your car-free miles, and how you stack up to other commuters in the city. Since May, people in Indy have logged more than 16,000 miles of car-free commuting. That campaign will run through August.
