Programs looks to keep kids active and off the streets

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Keeping Indianapolis children, teens and streets safe for the summer is the aim of a program hosted by the Indiana Youth Institute.

Bringing leaders from the community together today and tomorrow, the hope is that a proactive approach will keep local kids busy and out of trouble.

Called the Youth Worker Cafe, the idea is to help young people find positive ways to fill their time while school is out.

“We know that youth violence not just here in Indianapolis has been a problem, but it’s one across the country  And we’re trying to get in front of it and provide the kind of services to keep our young people busy this summer,” said Reverend Charles Harrison.

Harrison says instead of having children wander around aimlessly, they hope to provide job opportunities and activities that will give them something positive to do.
