2nd man convicted in retired teacher’s beating death

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) – A second man has been convicted in the bludgeoning death of a 69-year-old retired teacher in northern Indiana.

A LaPorte County jury convicted Tre’von Walker on Tuesday in the death of Gerald Peters. He also was found guilty of robbery and theft. The South Bend Tribune reports that Walker faces a prison term of up to 118 years. Another man, 23-year-old Ryan Phelps, also was convicted in Peters’ death and was sentenced to 85 years in prison.

Authorities say Peters was beaten with a baseball bat.

Two co-defendants testified against Walker during the trial. Walker’s defense claimed lies were told about Walker’s involvement in Peters’ killing.

The two co-defendants will face robbery charges in exchange for their testimony.
