INDOT to install 2 flashing yellow arrows in Fishers

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — Drives in Fishers can expect to see two new flashing yellow arrows beginning  Friday at State Road 37 at 126th Street and 131st Street.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is scheduled to install the lights on Friday. They say that motorists should be prepared for traffic delays in those areas while they are installed.

Signs mounted next to the new lights will tell drivers to yield to traffic when making a left turn.

The newer flashing yellow arrow system was first installed in 2013 in Indiana. However, the installation of the lights on the city’s south side were called into question following a fatal crash in April. “Witnesses stated that new lights in the intersection may have been confusing to drivers,” IFD spokeswoman, Rita Reith told 24-Hour News 8 following the crash.

INDOT said national studies show that the flashing lights are more intuitive for drivers. The lights should also result in fewer crashes as traffic can move more efficiently at intersections.

Five other intersections in Indianapolis received the flashing lights in May.
