Hinchcliffe says he has no memory of 500 practice crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe spoke Wednesday about the crash that nearly took his life and said he has one more major surgery to go.

In a fiery crash during practice for the Indianapolis 500 last month, his car made hard contact with the turn three SAFER Barrier and slid on its right side all the way into turn four.

Hinchcliffe credits the Indianapolis safety team with saving his life.

In a teleconference from his Indianapolis home today, he said despite the seriousness of his injuries and the significant loss of blood, he has no memory of what happened that day.

“It really wasn’t until several days later, when I was moved out of ICU and was kind of sitting around with some friends and family and some of the doctors, really hearing all of their first person accounts of how that day was for them and kind of hearing their stories, that it really began to sink in,” said Hinchcliffe.

Hinchcliffe said he will have abdomen surgery in about four to six weeks. He said that will put him down again for several weeks after that.

Hinchcliffe said he counts the number of steps he takes each day so he doesn’t over do it.
