Progress being made on new Indy YMCA

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Construction of a new YMCA in downtown Indianapolis is well underway.

The project at the CityWay YMCA broke ground last summer on South Street between Delaware and Alabama streets. It sits on 14-acres that stretches from South and Louisiana streets.

The project is estimated to cost about $24 million.

“This should be our largest of square footage and membership,” Eric Ellsworth, president and CEO of YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, said. “We anticipate it will be one of the most successful YMCA’s in country and downtown area. Demand is not just from businesses, but families as well.”

They expect to have about 15,000 members. The three-story facility will include an elevated running track, two indoor swimming pools and three basketball courts.

The YMCA says it is scheduled to open around Dec. 15.
