False alarm in Lafayette? That’ll be $25

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Starting next month, the Lafayette Police Department will be issuing fines for false alarms at commercial and residential properties.

The Crime Prevention Unit has been working since the first of the year to lower the number of false alarms.

So far this year, police have observed a slight decline in the amount of alarm calls, but the department is still receiving more than 300 false alarm calls per month.

Police will begin issuing fines as of July 1 to responsible parties when Lafayette police receive, respond and arrive at a false alarm.

Property owners will be fined $25 after the first three false alarms.

The next three false alarms will result in a $50 fine.

A $100 fine will be issued for three more false alarms and a $200 fine for each violation after that.

Property owners have two weeks to pay the fines at the City Clerk’s office.

Appeals can be made to the Board of Works within two weeks of the notice of violation.
