Granger brothers die from apparent overdoses after party

GRANGER, Ind. (AP) – Two brothers from Granger both died Sunday morning of suspected overdoses after attending a party near their home on Saturday night, according to St. Joseph County authorities.

Police said they plan to interview dozens of people as they investigate the deaths. Two other men suffered overdoses at the house party but are expected to survive, authorities said.

Officers initially were called about 1:30 a.m. Sunday to assist one of the other men at the party who appeared to have suffered an overdose.

Officers again were called 11:30 a.m. Sunday to the brothers’ home, the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office said. Nick Savage, 21, and Jack Savage, 18, were found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner’s office said.

The brothers, both of whom graduated from Penn High School, went home to sleep after the party but never woke up, police said.

At least 15 partygoers were interviewed by police after the brothers were found dead, commander Tim Corbett of the Metro Homicide Unit said at a press conference Sunday evening. Police planned to interview an additional 20 to 30 people, he said.

The interviews allowed officers to prevent a third overdose death from happening on Sunday, after learning about another man who attended the party and may have taken the same substances. He man was taken to a hospital for treatment when police visited his home and found him exhibiting symptoms of an overdose.

“If not for the officers, that kid could be dead right now,” county prosecutor Ken Cotter said.

Authorities believe the men took a lethal combination of prescription drugs, but toxicology results still are pending, County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek said.

“At this point, it appears to be prescription drugs,” the sheriff said. “Obviously, if the prescription doesn’t belong to you, you shouldn’t be taking it. You don’t know what the effects are on you.”

An investigation is ongoing.
