Woman pulls into parking lot to deliver baby boy inside of car

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In less than eight months, one fire department has already received two calls for a special kind of delivery.

The Wayne Township Fire Department discovered a bundle of joy in a parking lot near West Washington Street and Brandt Street.

Firefighters from station 83 really had no idea what to expect when they walked into work Tuesday morning.

It all happened in the parking lot of a storage and furniture store where firefighters said a woman took matters into her own hands.

The Wayne Township Fire Department couldn’t go into much detail about the case because of privacy laws, but told 24-Hour News 8 the pregnant woman was driving more than 60 miles from Brazil, Indiana to Indianapolis. They said she was with her two kids when the third one came knocking.

She called 911, but ended up delivering the baby boy on her own while inside of her car.

Lt. Rob McKain said calls like this one are rare, something you don’t see every day.

“We probably see once a year, once every couple of years or something along of that nature,” said McKain.

But the last time the department had something like this happen was last October when a woman delivered a baby girl in the back seat of a taxi cab.

McKain said firefighters have to remain calm when they arrive on the scene.

“With us coming with a calm presence, it’s going to calm the mother down and give us a better chance of having a good outcome,” said McKain.

In addition, firefighters also have to go through extensive training. McKain said they hit the books, taking a number of classes over a two year period.

“Some of those classes are specific towards what we call OBGYN or child labor delivery style runs,” said McKain.

Each class can last about four to six hours long, but in the end the mothers always end up doing most of the work.

“Most of the time, mother nature has worked us out pretty well where there isn’t a lot that’s really required from us other than to make certain that the scene is safe,” said McKain.

24-Hour News 8 reached out to the mom for a comment, but she declined for a later time.

We learned she and her baby boy are doing just fine. They should be released from the hospital sometime later this week.
