Email account of southeast Indiana county clerk is hacked

GREENSBURG, Ind. (AP) – A county clerk in southeastern Indiana says hackers gained access to her office email account and sent out thousands of bogus emails about forgiving student loans.

Decatur County Clerk Adina Roberts said Tuesday that a contractor has corrected the problem, but she’s still busy deleting replies to the emails sent through her account.

Roberts says her email account has received more than 12,000 messages returned as undeliverable since the weekend hacking.

Roberts tells Greensburg Daily News the emails sent through her Greensburg office’s email account contain spelling errors and tell recipients they can call a toll-free number to get help having federal student loans forgiven. Greensburg is about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Roberts says her email account does not contain sensitive information and is used for general purposes.
