Northern Indiana house explosion hurts 3 who were inside

GRANGER, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say an explosion at a suburban South Bend house caused minor injuries to three people who were inside.

Clay Fire Territory Assistant Chief Jaren Kilian says a St. Joseph County police officer who helped them from the house Friday afternoon also was taken to a hospital after being overcome by smoke.

The explosion in the community of Granger blew out a portion of the back wall and caused fire and smoke damage throughout the two-story house.

The South Bend Tribune reports those in the house were a homeowner, her daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend.

Kilian says the explosion’s cause was under investigation. Utility crews shut off natural gas to the house, and Kilian says there wasn’t any concern about danger to other houses in the neighborhood.
