Victim in collision dies, teenager arrested

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said a serious crash reportedly caused by a 14-year-old, killed a man on Friday.

Officers responded to a two vehicle crash on the city’s east side on Friday. Terry Riggs, 53, Indianapolis, had to be extricated from his vehicle.

He was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in extremely critical condition where he later died. The accident was less than four miles from his home.

Riggs was a newlywed, married only a month to his longtime girlfriend of 10 years, Barbara. She shared one of the happiest days of her life, moments after saying “I do.”

“I am completely devastated. He was such a good man/ “I loved him so much and he loved his family just as much,” said Riggs.

Debra Duszyskni heard the accident on Friday. She lives across the street from the busy intersection. Duszyskni said, both cars looked crunched and appeared to be completely totaled.

“When I found out he died, it was upsetting. This is terrible news for anyone and I feel for his family. The fact that it is Father Day’s weekend and he is someone’s son, husband and loved one is awful his life ended like this,” said Duszyskni.

Terry’s neighbor still feels like the tragic news isn’t reality.

“Terry was an awesome man, he really was. He was friendly, he loved his wife (and) he spent time with my kids. He enjoyed doing yard work. Terry would wave at me while riding a lawn mower or barbecuing in the back yard,” said next door neighbor Heather Brummett.

The other driver in the crash was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators believe the teen was speeding, ignored a red light and was driving a vehicle stolen from his grandmother.

The 14-year-old suspect was reported missing from Mason County, Illinois earlier in June.
