White Co. files emergency declaration with the state

WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – White County has filed a local Disaster Emergency Declaration with the state.

White County Emergency Management Director Roberta Yerk said she was able to get all the signatures needed to file. She said as the floodwaters continue to go down, crews will begin assessing the damage.

The assessments will begin in Buffalo, Indiana, and move throughout the county as the flooded areas clear. Yerk says the results will be filed with the state, which will then decide whether the area will qualify for assistance.

Shelters are still available to White County residents who are in need of help. Wendy Starr with the American Red Cross said resources will be available at the Red Cross Chapter House in White County, located at 1001 Main St., in Monticello. The facility is closed Friday, but will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Starr added the shelter at the Best Western Brandywine in Monticello is now closed.
