Jackson County launches fund drive to build animal shelter

SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) – A southern Indiana county that wants to build an animal shelter has already brought in $12,000 before even launching a formal fundraising campaign.

A citizens committee wants to raise $200,000 over the next two years to build a dog shelter behind the Jackson County sheriff’s department offices. The county’s Board of Zoning Appeals approved the project in February.

The shelter would be designed to hold up to 200 dogs and would rely solely on private donations.

The Tribune reports that low-level offenders at the jail would feed and care for the dogs and keep the shelter clean. Sheriff Mike Carothers would oversee the facility.

The citizens committee is selling granite plaques, walkway bricks and blocks for the shelter for prices ranging from $125 to $1,500.
