“La Casa Azul” premieres this week

It’s a bold and dynamic new musical based on the life of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, and you’re invited to attend!

The Gregory Hancock Dance theatre presents La Casa Azul, the musical, and it’s coming to the Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts this week! It’s an original musical, written and choreographed by Mr. Gregory Hancock, and relates the intense and turbulent life and artistic journey of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in a production 20 years in the making.

Frida Kahlo, born in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution, was stricken by polio at age six. An accident in her teen years left her crippled and unable to bear children. Her troubled marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and her problematic involvement with the Communist party further complicated her life. According to Mr. Hancock, ” La Casa Azul speaks to all of us on human strength, tolerance, dignity, and fragility.”

The musical, sung in English, features Mr. Hancock’s original music, lyrics, choreography, costumes, and direction, and it will bring together artists across central Indiana not only to perform, but also to create all aspects of this ambitious production. For example, the striking set designs incorporate the work of Indianapolis artist Beatriz Vasquez, known for her expertise in Mexican craft such as “papel picado.” With additional lyrics by Kate Ayers, orchestration by Nicholas Cline, lighting design by Ryan Koharchik, and vocal direction by Terry Woods, La Casa Azul promises to be

singular, bold, and powerful.

Over 2,000 people are expected to be in attendance during the performances, and it’s expected to attract regional and national audiences to Carmel, Indiana, and theater producers and directors from across the country.

Showtimes are June 25-27, 7p and June 28, 3pm.
