Report: DNA found in cabin linked to escaped prisoners

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. (MEDIA GENERAL) – According to CBS News, New York State Police officials have found DNA evidence that prison escapees Richard Matt and David Sweat were in the upstate New York area in the past 24 hours.

The search has zeroed in on a mountainous area west of the Clinton Correctional Facility, from which the convicts escaped June 6, 2015, using power tools to cut holes into large pipes.

Sources told CBS News DNA from the escapees was found in a cabin that had been broken into near Wolf Pond. The evidence says the escapees were in the cabin in the past 24 hours.

State police have set up a command center in Owls Head, New York, approximately 22 miles west of the prison.

Search efforts in Allegany County, New York, near the state’s southern border with Pennsylvania, ended Sunday night after police scoured the area for approximately 36 hours after they received what they considered a credible tip.

Matt and Sweat, both convicted murderers, escaped in the early morning hours Saturday, June 6, 2015, and have been on the lam since.
