2,400 children fed by mobile food pantry

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The CARE Mobile Food Pantry served 5,257 people in the Indianapolis community during its first week.

The Department of Public Safety and Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana said people accepted the donations over a five day span starting June 15.

Many children benefited according to the newly released data and out of all of the people served 2,452 were under 17 years old.

IMPD believed this service will help decrease violence in the focus areas where the CARE Mobile Food Pantry paid a visit.

Many officers said providing free food to communities in need could help decrease the number of juvenile theft reports written about kids stealing food.

“No one should ever go hungry. I am not sure this will cut down violence, but it will help. I think they should continue doing this past 13 weeks. I hope they do. I have two children and I can’t imagine them going hungry,” said community member, Brenda Davis.

“I think a lot of people are embarrassed to take the help. I was in my younger years. No one should go without. I tell people don’t be ashamed to come out and get what you need,” community member, Rasheed Miller said.
