One dead after dump truck, car collide

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – One person has been confirmed dead after a crash between a car and a dump truck, which also sent one vehicle into a Lafayette business.

According to 24-Hour News Eight sister station, WLFI, authorities confirm that 80-year-old Melba Samuels, of Lafayette, has died as a result of the crash.

The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene Wednesday morning. Police said a dump truck and a car collided on Schuyler Avenue Wednesday morning. After the collision, police said the dump truck crashed into Popp-A-Top Beer, Wine and Food, located at 1802 Schuyler Ave.

A witness told police the car was headed north on 18th Street and disregarded a stop sign. The dump truck was headed east on Schuyler Avenue, when it struck the driver’s side door. The collision caused the dump truck to crash into the business and the car came to a rest on the sidewalk near the building.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police say no one was in the building at the time of the crash.

Lafayette police said Schuyler Avenue is closed between 18th and 19th streets. Officers also shutdown N. 18th Street between Schuyler and Monon avenues.
