6 injured in chain reaction crash near Seymour

SEYMOUR, Ind. (WISH) – Six people were hurt in a crash on Interstate 65 near Seymour on Wednesday.

Indiana State Police troopers responded to the crash in the northbound lanes around 4:40 p.m. It was at the 41.5 mile marker.

According to police, a semi was heading north when it hit the back of a Pontiac Vibe, causing it to spin into the emergency lane. The semi continued forward and hit a GMC Yukon, causing that vehicle to leave the road and go into a ditch. After that, the semi kept going and hit a Nissan Altima and pushed it into the back of a Toyota Rav4 and a box truck. Police say the Nissan became wedged under the box truck, trapping the female driver. Emergency crews extricated her, and she was taken to a local hospital with internal injuries. Her 10-month-old son was not hurt.

The driver of the semi told police that traffic just stopped in front of him. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a hand injury. The driver of the Pontiac was taken by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital after suffering a head and leg injury. The two people in the Yukon went to the hospital with complaints of pain. Those in the Rav4 were not hurt.

Police say traffic was backed up because of construction near the 45 mile marker. Lanes were closed for more than five hours after the crash.
