DNR: Victim at Greenfield resort was learning how to swim

GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — An official with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the 18-year-old who was pulled from the water at a resort in Hancock County was trying to learn how to swim with his friends.

Anthony Moore, Jr. died at the hospital Wednesday night.

A DNR official said the group was swimming when Moore went under. When friends were unable to rescue him, one of them called 911.

He was recovered from water eight to 10 feet deep.

Employees said a lifeguard came from another part of the resort and tried multiple times to rescue Moore. He was eventually pulled from the water by Greenfield Police officials, according to Greenfield Fire Chief James Roberts, and paramedics performed lifesaving measures.

“Our guys always strive to do the best they can to save someone’s life. When somebody doesn’t make it, it’s disappointing,” Chief Roberts said.

Chuck Kinder, who lives at the resort, said he was outside fixing his golf cart when he saw law enforcement arrive. One of his friends went to the water to learn more.

“My buddy stopped and said, don’t go over there. It’s bad over there,” Kinder said. “A boy drowned. So we didn’t go any farther than that.”

Kinder said the water at the resort is usually safe.

Chief Roberts said, during his more than twenty years with the Greenfield Fire Department, he’s never had to respond to another drowning incident there.
