Choosing the best sunglasses for you

It’s summer, and it’s bright! Are you wearing your sunglesses? If not, Dr. Nicholas Garn, with Zionsville Eyecare, says you should!

As part of tomorrow being National Sunglasses Day, Dr. Garn says whether they’re polarized, reflective or mirrored, the type of sunglasses you wear might not be as important as the fact that you actually wear them. He says exposure to ultraviolet rays (UV) from the sun over time can cause lasting negative effects and serious eye damage including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (which slowly and eventually causes blindness).

Here are a few facts!

More than 25 percent of U.S. adults rarely or never wear sunglasses, and nearly two-thirds are unaware of the link between UV exposure and serious eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. It is a simple fact you must wear sunglasses to prevent damage to your eyes. Kids are most at risk since they tend to spend more time outside. Like other diseases – what happens now could show up in their 40’s, 50’s or beyond.
