Water recedes in Muncie after extensive street flooding

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – Water has receded around Muncie after flash flooding covered many streets across the city and sent water pouring into many basements.

Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler says he saw manhole covers being lifted off streets late Friday as storm sewers couldn’t handle the downpours that continued into early Saturday.

He says water reached perhaps five feet deep on some neighborhood streets but that the flooding was largely down by midday Saturday.

The basement of City Hall was flooded by the storm, which Tyler says caused high water in some parts of the city where he had never seen it before.

Crews plucked several people from stranded cars, but no home evacuations or injuries have been reported.
