Broken water pipe damages Purdue’s Physics Building

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – A broken pipe in Purdue University’s Physics Building sent water pouring down the elevator shaft into the basement and caused officials to close the facility.

Purdue spokesman Brian Zink says the building reopened Monday morning. Purdue’s fire chief says crews were called Sunday after someone heard water running down an elevator shaft on the third floor of the building on the West Lafayette campus.

The problem was traced to a broken pipe in the building’s attic and that water was running into a high-voltage area of the basement. About eight faculty members or students who were inside were told to leave because of safety risks.

Power was shut off to the building for repairs and cleaning work.
