SWAT team called after man breaks into Lafayette home

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Lafayette man is under arrest after police say he broke into a residence and used a kitchen knife to threaten the people living in the home.

Just before 10 p.m. Friday, police were called to a home in the 300 block of S. 18th Street, after a report that a male had forcibly entered the home. The caller told police the man was armed with a large kitchen knife, injured himself and threatened to injure the occupants.

Police say they confronted 22-year-old Lafayette resident Cartilus Walters at the home. However, Walters retreated back into home and barricaded the door – preventing officers from making entry.

After officers could not speak with Walters, Lafayette SWAT and the Lafayette Crisis/Negotiation Team responded to the scene. Negotiators attempted to speak with Walters on his cellphone, but he refused to answer.

SWAT members introduced a “throw phone” through a window so that negotiators could speak with him, but he also refused to answer that phone.

After all attempts to negotiate with the Walters had failed, SWAT deployed gas into the house. A few minutes after the gas was deployed, Walters was taken into custody just before 1 a.m. Saturday.

Walters was arrested for burglary, intimidation with a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement. He also had two outstanding warrants.

Walters was taken to a local hospital for treatment of self-inflicted wounds, and then booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail.
