Driver leaves infant behind while running from police

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A driver abandoned an infant while running from the scene of a car crash in Lafayette late Monday night.

Police say after the wreck in the 2500 block of 18th Street, the driver took off on foot with an infant that was also in the car. Two injured passengers were left behind.

At some point during the chase, police say the child was abandoned. Officers did not say where the infant was found but did say the Department of Child Services was contacted. It’s not known if the child remains with DCS or has been turned over to family.

The two injured people were taken to a hospital. Police say at least one person’s injuries were “serious.”

Officers did not locate the runaway driver.
