Parasite found in swimming pools could be fatal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Pool goers are being warned of water conditions this summer.

ABC News reports outbreaks in pools, hot tubs and other recreational uses of water containing a parasite called Cryptosporidium.

On Friday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention released a new report that showed 90 outbreaks resulted in 1,788 illnesses, 95 hospitalizations and one death between 2011 and 2012.

According to the CDC, the parasite can survive in treated water for 10 days, whereas E. coli parasites are killed in a matter of minutes or hours in a treated pool.

Officials say the parasite can be cleared from the body in two to three weeks, but when infecting a person with a weak immune system the illness can be chronic or fatal, causing gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea.

Those enjoying a pool should research the most recent inspection through the local health department.
