Water still being released from Huntington and Wabash dams

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)  In the nearly 24 hours since the Army Corp of Engineers began releasing more water from dams on Roush Lake and the Salamonie Reservoir, not much has changed.according to an official with Wabash County Emergency Management.

The two bodies of water reached capacity on Tuesday and the Army Corp decided to increase the amount of water being released to lower the levels.

According to 24-Hour News 8 sister station, WANE, the gauge at the Wabash Street  bridge in Wabash has been reading 17.9 feet for the past 12 hours.  Officials had warned residents in certain areas of Huntington and Wabash counties that they may need to evacuate if the extra water being released from the two dams caused the Wabash River to rise significantly.

Bob Brown of Wabash County Emergency Management told NewsChannel 15 his agency is “keeping their eye to the sky and praying for sunshine for the next four or five days.

A shelter has been set up for people who might need to evacuate, but so far no one has used it.

How long the threat of flooding remains depends on the weather.

In the meantime, the speed of the water flowing from the Salamonie Dam is catching the attention of people.
