Coroner: Notre Dame student killed in fall was intoxicated

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Toxicology results on a University of Notre Dame student who fell to his death the day before he was due to graduate show he was intoxicated at the time of his death.

The South Bend Tribune reports results released Thursday show 21-year-old William Meckling of Centennial, Colorado, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12 percent.

That’s above Indiana’s legal limit of .08 percent for driving a motor vehicle.

St. Joseph County’s deputy coroner says Meckling had no other drugs in his system.

He died May 16 from blunt-force injuries after falling about 35 feet from the roof of the Joyce Center, which he and other students had climbed onto.

Meckling was a member of the school’s fencing team and had been set to graduate the following day.
