INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Instead of putting up their house for sale and listing it with a realtor, one couple from Columbus is going a much less conventional route.

Tim and Deanna Railing are giving their house away to the winner of an essay contest. The cost to enter the contest is $150.

A panel of anonymous judges, not including the couple selling the home, will choose the essay winner.

The Railings recently stopped by to talk about their creative approach to selling their house.

The couple will only give the house away to a winner if they receive a minimum of 4,500 entries. If they don’t reach 4,500 entries, the $150 fee will be refunded.

As of July 5, the application had been downloaded 8,000 but the Railings had received only 100 entries.

The deadline to enter is Nov. 16 and the Railings said they would like to announce a winner on New Year’s Eve. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
