IMS president: More music-only events likely

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Saturday’s Rolling Stones performance marked the first concert in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history that was not tied to a racing event. IMS President Doug Boles says it probably won’t be the last.

“And I hope that in the future when we do it, it’s going to be somebody like the Rolling Stones,” Boles said.

Boles said one reason the Stones were drawn to Indianapolis was the chance to play at the iconic venue.

The IMS President met Mick Jagger Friday night at a local restaurant, and the singer called him over to his table to ask a question.

“The first question out of his mouth was, ‘Is it true?’” Boles said. “‘Is it true that nobody’s ever done this at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?’”

Track officials say another concert not tied to a race will probably not happen again this year. But Boles said a music event is likely for 2016.

IMS will always be all about racing for John Green, of Indianapolis, a racing fan who goes to the Brickyard 400 ever year. That doesn’t mean he was disappointed by Saturday’s event.

“I like the idea of opening it up to other things,” Green said. “Plenty of parking… there’s nothing wrong with it.”

Boles said officials started discussing the event before they knew it would be a Rolling Stones show. He said they suggested Rolling Stones right away. Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks and U2 were a few other suggestions.
