Local businessman warns of fireworks danger through own injury

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Scott Wise, owner of Scotty’s Brewhouse, has an unwanted reminder of playing with fireworks this Fourth of July weekend.

The accident started with holding sparklers in his left hand.

“I had another firework in my hand and I lit the sparklers and I think the sparklers ignited the other firework,” he said, “And a bright burst of white fire just in my eyes.”

He went straight to the emergency room.

“I’m just like ‘Hey here’s me’ cliche statistic number ten coming in the room,” he said.

He said he’s used fireworks for decades and never had an accident.

But he said he could have been more careful.

“There’s things I look back and it’s common sense, why would I have done that,” he said.

He said a second degree burn is a painful reminder fireworks are dangerous and said he will make changes in the future.

“Right now I don’t even want to see a firework, but next year when I go to do something like this I’ll try to have a fire extinguisher and a bucket of water, first aid kit,” he said.

Scott is sharing his experience on social media, hoping he can prevent someone else from having to learn this lesson the hard way.

“If I can help someone else not do that and protect themselves or their children, then I’ll take it as a win,” he said.

As for his hand, doctors say he doesn’t have any permanent damage.

But he believes the lesson will last forever.

“Over time it’s going to heal and I hope I have a little scar there to remind me every year going forward to not forget about what I went through this last weekend,” he said.
