Indy DPW not giving out sandbags to public

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Department of Public Works said on Wednesday it’s not giving out sandbags to the public.

The department made the announcement at 10 a.m. Wednesday after heavy rain on Tuesday led to flash flooding in the area.

According to a release, the city makes sandbags available to the public in the case of a river flood warning issued by the National Weather Service for Marion County. Officials say sandbags are not distributed for flash flood conditions.

Dozens of people were forced from their homes on Tuesday after heavy rains left local neighborhoods under water. Many people were still out of their homes Wednesday morning.

Rain was expected to continue, and a flash flood watch was issued for most of central Indiana from noon Wednesday through Thursday afternoon.
