Camp WACK helps kids with disabilities boost self-esteem

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A summer camp for kids with disabilities is giving attendees a boost of confidence.

Camp WACK, which stands for Water Adventure Camps for Kids, lets children water ski using special sit skis.

President Amie Gish said the kids have benefited tremendously from the camp over the last nine years.

“They get to come, have camaraderie with other children that have like abilities of themselves,” said Gish. “It’s a day that’s special for them. It’s something they’re not going to get to do otherwise.”

It’s those things that have the attendees yearning for more.

“We have a lot of parents that write on our Facebook page and tell us how much the campers are really enjoying it. How much they are still talking about it,” said Gish. “Throughout the year, they keep asking, ‘When is Camp WACK? When is Camp WACK?’”

Volunteers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana State Police were following on water scooters to make sure children got back safely to shore.
