CPR instructor accused of keeping over $7K in class fees

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The former division chief of EMS from the St. Joseph Township Fire Department was arrested Wednesday morning for pocketing money collected from CPR classes he taught.

Indiana State Police and the Allen County Sheriff’s Department spent five months investigating reports that Robert A Grayless, 50, of New Haven took more than $9,000 from when he taught classes between June of 2013 and December of 2014. All of the funds should have been turned into the St. Joseph Township Trustee, however investigators found that just over $2,000 had actually been turned in.

The investigation began after the St. Joseph Township Fire Chief and Trustee went to the police in February of this year. Fire Chief David Ringer had noticed that the fees collected for a class didn’t add up to the number of students in attendance. Grayless was terminated right after the investigation was launched.

Ringer told NewsChannel 15 that Grayless had worked in the public sector for 25 years. He had been hired by the township fire department in January of 2013.

Grayless was arrested and charged with two counts of theft. He is scheduled to be in court on Monday July 13, 2015.
